Primarily sunny and clear:
On the weather and climate in Serfaus.
The Serfaus area has an excellent climate. The plentiful cultivation of wheat, barley, rye and fruit at an altitude of around 1,500 metres is proof of the favourable climate. Serfaus is situated on the so called "Sun terrace of Tyrol", surrounded by such impressive mountain ranges. In the west there is the Raeticon and Verwall group, in the north there are the Allgäu and Lechtal Alps, in the east there is the Ötztal central range. In the south there are the mountains of the Ortler group, in the south west there are the Bernina and Silvretta groups. Based on this position amongst the high mountains the area is protected against bad weather on all sides. And this unique spot, on a terrace facing south, protected from the north wind and open to the sunny south and Mediterranean climate of South Tyrol, also has a major influence on the excellent Serfaus climate.
Embedded in the so called Engadin dry area, that extends in the north as far as Landeck and in the south as far up in the Engadin as St. Moritz and Arosa, Serfaus has all the benefits of a high altitude spa town. The air is warm, dry, free of dust and pollen and calm. Rainfall is much less in the summer than in the rest of the Tyrol. The sun shines at an altitude of 1,475 metres its pleasant rays much more strongly than 600 metres lower down in the upper Inn valley. By the way it shines more than 2,000 hours in Serfaus, which is much more than in the rest of the Tyrol. And Serfaus has the highest number of sunny days in all of Austria!
The start of the evolution to high altitude spa goes back to Grand Duke Franz Ferdinand, who first initiated the scientific survey of the location and climate of Serfaus. The results of this survey were at that time so excellent that the first work to develop tourism was already started shortly after the First World War. The first decisive impulse came from the construction of the Cologne House on the Komperdellalpe in 1927. Well-founded scientific studies were started in 1926 under the leadership of Dr. Händel. These covered all climate factors such as air pressure, temperature, humidity, clouds, wind direction and wind speed, rain volume and times, snow height and duration of snow coverage, duration of sunshine and diffuse skylight radiation. The series of constant observations over a period of 25 years (1926 to 1951) prove that Serfaus has the ideal prerequisites for a high altitude spa resort or high altitude clinic and compares well with all well known high altitude spa resorts such as Davos and Arosa.
It is also important for the quality of Serfaus as high altitude spa resort, that the number of days with snow coverage is relatively high. The average number of days with snow coverage is 188 cm ?. The snow cover binds dust, heightens the rays through reflection and allows the popular mix of winter sport and culture. This means that Serfaus is in a great position to unite snow certainty and maximum sunshine.
"If you check the prerequisites for high altitude and spa climates, it is clear that the high altitude spa Serfaus fulfils all prerequisites in an ideal way. Generally the individual biological influencing factors of a mountainous climate are split into invigorating and soothing climatic factors. The lower air pressure at a high altitude, and the increase and balance of the sun and UV radiation in the course of a day and a year as well as the strong drying capacity as a result of the low humidity belong to the first group. These factors promote body warmth, improve the skin’s circulation and generally influence the neuro-vegetative system. The soothing climatic factors include the particularly wind shielded location, low levels of fog and richness of radiation as well as the acid level of the air – bactericides – pH values. The soothing factors primarily help to reduce the risk of colds." (Quote: Austrian Pharmacists’ Journal "). The people of Serfaus keep their famous healthy air clean as well as they can. For example there is no through traffic. In the village there is the only village underground railway in Europe - which was already built December 14, 1985!
A favourable climate and geological assets make for a rich a very interesting set of plants and flowers. In the Lausbach valley alone the interested walker can find over a hundred different Alpine plants. In addition to the cerinthe glabra, the rocket and Roman orchids there is also the large-leafed achillea, yellow gentian, adoxa moschatellina and the Pyrenean violet. The locations of the four species of dandelions: Kärnten, Arctic, grey and horned: the grey dandelion can only be seen in a few places in Austria.
